After walking barefoot to connect with our hunter-gatherer ancestor, the Environment History class continued its exploration of early humans.
In France, the Lascaux Caves have some of the most numerous and best preserved paintings from about 16,000 years ago. The class viewed these images via PowerPoint which invoked some responses of awe, but viewing is not the same as doing.
The teacher of the class, Keith Barger, had discussed the idea with Yan, one of the art teachers, about a joint history art class where the students would create a hand print collage like those found in Lascaux. The logistical details were arranged. This sort of inter-department sharing of time and talent broadens the learning opportunities for our students and happens here at Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School because the teaching team supports each other.
On the day of the activity, the students walked together to the building with the art studio classroom. They listened to Yan’s instructions. To mimic the negative space hand print like those found in Lascaux, paint needed to be applied the where the hand met the paper. Keith demonstrated both the paint application and the prompt washing that restored the hand to a near paint free condition.
The students each contributed their hand, signifying that they too were here, just like the prints of Lascaux. They cooperated with the clean up and concluded with good memories of engaged learning.
The class has now concluded this unit and is continuing on with seeing how the revolution of agriculture forever altered our relationship with the earth.
