Hello, my name is Justin Dalley and I teach U.S. History, English 1, and Conversation English. I have been given the honor to write about my classes regarding the projects we have both inside and out of our classroom.

The very first thing you must have is a big heart and passion. This is the key to opening up door to the students. Teaching is something I do with the best intention for what the student will learn from it. Not just what they will learn, but how they will learn and retain that information in memory in a positive way. Learning comes with many techniques and through the years of teaching and working with many types of students, I believe project-based learning is one of the best ways for a student to achieve that pivotal moment of understanding. I will try to paint you a picture of some of the projects we do inside my classroom just like you are a student in the front row of my classroom.

You are now a student sitting in my U.S. History class and you may have little U.S. History knowledge. My way to combat that is a multiple process of teaching techniques. One, we talk about the certain time period before we even read over the first page. I have them look at the pictures and maybe the title and tell me what they think it means? Then we discuss as a group and began taking turns reading the information out of the book. This is where I stop periodically and reinforce with real life examples that they may understand more, to bring meaning to studying is very important it can root a connection to the brain. There are also exact replicas of Historical items in my classroom that aids learning. Lastly, do not forget the humor as well.

Then questions are highly encouraged, and I will ask student questions periodically to gauge their understanding of the material. After we have read some sections in the book, I came up with the idea of a researching project of coconuts. I thought coconuts could bring out some creative style and help them put more meaning to what they are currently learning. I purchased all the materials, pealed, gutted, and cut the coconuts in half and after they dried, they were put to use. The students were shocked at first and bewildered looking of what to do with these coconuts? The students were asked to select from a group of famous people from the time period which we were reading about. Research, discover, and construct an oral report concerning their famous person they had chosen. Their coconut also had to represent the person they chose as well. They gave the oral report with their Coconut in hand, it was great to see. Here are the Coconut heads after completion.

We also acted out a part from World War 1 using nerf pistols. The students had to see if they could get from one side to the other after they read about trench warfare to understand the enormity of and impossibility of accomplishing this task.

In English conversation class we do multiple projects as well, such as learning about Earth Day, Pollution, baking cookies, planting new flowers and help cleaning up the environment around us. If there is a chance to break from the confines of a classroom and put practice into play, this has made learning a fun environment to be in. Students learn more and retain more when they participate in hands on activities. Everything in this class is based upon improving English skills and doing everything in English such as baking cookies and following directions. The reward present itself if done correctly is a freshly made treat to eat.

In many of my classes we participate in traditions as well. I am not just a teacher, but I am also a life long learner with a passion for knowledge. I’ve learned recently of a Chinese tradition and used this in my classroom. Some seemed to never play it before while some knew exactly what the tradition was. Due to the credit of a Chinese friend I was told about a Chinese tradition of breaking eggs and eating eggs and the beginning of Summer day. It sounded like something perfect for my classes. Some students may be missing home, or some may have never played this before, but it also was a great excuseto laugh together and go outside after long day of studying. We exchanged a lot of information and I shared my traditions as well. Knowledge is power and doing hands on projects backed by important information, “adds more tools to the toolbelt”, as the American saying goes. Here are a few more pictures of projects in the classroom below. Thank you for your time and it is my honor to be here.
