When we are young, parents told us that You must not speak swear words. They are really bad and offensive words! A good kid should never use them.

But swear word it’s like a magic spell that u can’t get rid of. Most of the time they just come out of the mouth without thinking.\ Once there was a survey that showed 0.3%~0.7%of our daily languages consists of swear words. They even play an important role in our daily life.

Why do we need these swear words?

Swear words all around the word have one thing in common. Their syllables are especially short and the vowels are especially heavy. I don’t give examples here. You must know some swear words.

And this pronunciation characteristic makes swear words very powerful. When you see a big spider or your phone drops into the toilet, No other words work as well as swear words.

Swear words cannot only help us relieve strong feeling, but also relieve pain.

In an British psychological experiment, participants were asked to put their hand in ice water as long as possible. The result shows that the group that was allowed to say swear words could endure longer and feel less pain.

Why do swear words have this superpower? Some scholars associate it with philosophy. Because swearing breaks common rules.

The usefulness of every rule is not only to govern people, but also to give people rules to break. And swear words allow us to break these taboos in extreme situations, to achieve a specific purpose.

Swearing helps maintain social stability. Swearing allows people to vent their extreme emotions, allowing them to express their discontent in words without fighting. This is the wonder of human language. "The swear words are taken away and we're left with fists and guns, " Says Melissa Maurs, author of a brief history of swear words.

An American academic said: "We should praise and thank those who continue to ban bad language: courts, prudish teachers, publications, parents who didn’t allow children to swear. Because when the last prohibition against swearing goes away, swearing loses its power."

Besides, swear words also have a special social function, which is to promote friendly relations between people.This seems very unreasonable, but I’m going to tell you why.

Swear words have the power of breaking down barriers, so in the military or in the manual labor, workers’ use of swear words is very high, because they need close cooperation.

This is because swear words are a very good interpersonal testing tool. If I judge that I can swear in front of this person on this occasion, it means that person has passed my intimacy test. It means that we are inseparable, that we have values in common, and therefore do not resent our use of swear words.

This explains why parents don’t say swear words when they r talking to their children. Because parents need to maintain the necessary dignity in the presence of their children. If swear words appear in the conversation between parents and kids, parents just lose their identity as parents.

When I was searching for the information, i saw an article which talks about the definition of the word “Dirty” Nothing is dirty in nature. It is only dirty if it is misplaced. Food in the bowl is clean, but if it spilled on the clothes, it is dirty. Soil in the garden is clean, but if it’s on the bed, it is dirty.

It’s just like the swear words.

I can’t say swear words are good or bad. It depends on where they are used.
