上海宏润博源学校鼓励同学们从身边的小事做起,发挥所长为所在社区做贡献。作为学校,我们也非常愿意承担更多社会责任,发挥所长,为我们所在的大社区服务。

Shanghai Hongrun Boyuan School encourages its students to start with something small and with what they are good at to contribute to their community. We as a school are also ready to shoulder more social responsibilities: do what we are good at to serve the bigger community we are in.

2019年1月11日18:30-20:30,上海宏润博源学校举办了关于英语学习的公益讲座,邀请了周边有需求的同学、老师和家长一起参与。讲座分为三个部分:部分由我校外教Steven Bonta 博士主讲人类语言的特点以及对语言学习的启示;第二部分由我校外方校长Christopher Moses主讲英语学习中的有效做法;第三部分分为两组进行,参与者可以自由选择参加Christopher Moses校长的地道美国英语课堂或者向Steven Bonta老师进一步英语学习中的特定问题。

18:30-20:30, Jan. 11th, 2019 we held a public lecture on English learning to share our expertise with students, middle school teachers and parents in our neighborhood. This lecture included three parts: our foreign teacher Dr. Steven Bonta spoke on the characteristics of human language and what they coulsd mean for language learners and teachers; then our foreign Principal Christopher Moses shared some tips and strategies for learning English; next the audience was divided into two groups out of their own accord: one group had an authentic American English class with Principal Christopher Moses while the other group communicated further with Dr. Steven Bonta about specific English leaning.

Steven Bonta老师是美国康奈尔大学的语言学博士,有丰富的语言教学和研究经验:曾在美国大学和高中任教近二十年,除母语英语以外,还熟练掌握拉丁语、印度语、西班牙语、法语、俄语、梵文等多门外语;现在正在学习汉语,进步神速。

With a PhD in Linguistics from Cornell University, Mr. Steven Bonta has rich experience in language teaching and research: he taught English for almost twenty years in American colleges and high schools; besides his native language English, he is also good at many foreign languages such as Latin, Hindi, Spanish French, Russian, Sanskrit and so on; he is learning Chinese now and improving amazingly.

Steven老师跟大家分享了人类语言的五个特点:1)语言是动态的,创造性的,不是静态的:我们经常会用一些新的词汇或新鲜的表述方式来描述身边的事物,这些新语言也是我们学习了解新事物的必要工具,没有这些我们可能就没有成长;2)语言是不断变化的:明代汉语与现代汉语有很大区别,甚至50年前的汉语与当今的汉语也有明显区别;年轻人也喜欢创造自己独有的语言来展现自己的独立;3)语言的目的是沟通意义:人类的社会属性决定了语言的交际目的,人类社会的发展与语言的发展是相互依存的,有些“狼孩”从小没有与人类社会接触,过了一定的年龄即便回到人类社会也再也学不会人类语言; 4)语言遵循其内在逻辑结构,即语法,但是语法也不是一成不变的,不同语言的语法结构也可能不一样;5)人类语言是先出现口语,很久之后才开始出现书写体系的。

In his lecture, Dr. Steven Bonta talked about the five characteristics of human language: 1) language is dynamic and creative, not static: we often use new words or use familiar words in new ways to express new things or phenomena; in fact, these new expressions are necessary tools for us to learn new things; 2) language changes constantly: the Chinese of today is very different from the Chinese of the Ming Dynasty; even the Chinese that children are learning today is not the same as the Chinese that children learned fifty years ago; youth like to show their independence by changing the language their parents speak; 3) the purpose of language is to communicate meaning; language’s communicative purpose is the result of our intensely social nature; human society and language are mutually dependent; children raised in isolation from all social contact generally cannot learn language, or learn it only very imperfectly; 4)language has logical structure, what we call grammar: these rules are not ironclad and unbreakable, like the laws of physics; 5) language is primarily spoken, and only secondarily written: written language occurred much later than spoken language.

接着,Steven老师说人类语言的这些特点对于语言学习者以及教语言的老师至少有以下三点启发:1)学习语言与别人一起,而不是独自学习:教室并不是学习语言的理想场所,不过我们可以尽量在教室里创造最有利于语言学习的条件,让同学们尽可能多地使用正在学习的语言;2)学习一门语言并不轻松,需要记忆词汇,熟悉语法,但这些都应为实现交际目的服务;3)学习语言时应注意掌握实际使用中的语言,而不仅仅是字典中经过修整的标准语言。

Then, Mr. Steven pointed out that the above characteristics of human language could inspire language learner and teachers at least in the following three aspects: 1) language is best learned socially and not individually: the classroom is not a perfect medium for language learning, but it should be used, as much as possible, to create the social conditions in which language learning is most effective; students must use the language with one another as much as possible; the more our students speak English, in spite of the effort, the better their English will become; 2) there is no easy road to learning a new language: in addition to the social dimension, there must be a lot of memorization to build vocabulary, become familiar with grammar, and so forth; but this should be the secondary focus, complementing the social aspect; 3) language learning should present language as it is actually used, not only the sanitized versions presented in grammar books: For example, it is impossible to understand spoken English well if you don’t know the meaning of the word “gonna”, which is used literally all the time, yet it is never mentioned in English textbooks. Very few people ever say, for example, “What are you going to do?” in spoken English. Instead, we always say something like “What’re ya gonna do?” or even “Whatcha gonna do?”.

讲座第二部分,Christopher Moses校长给大家分享了有效学习英语的建议,即努力给自己创造英文环境,比如将自己的手机和电脑设置成英文界面,浏览器使用必应等英文版,利用网络上丰富的英语学习资源,看英文电影时养成不看字幕的习惯,查找词汇的英文释义,给身边的物品贴上英文标签等。语言学习是不断累积的,开始学习一门语言时会觉得很难很沮丧,但是积累到一定程度就会变得容易。在英文环境里浸泡,尽可能多地使用英语是提升英语能力最有效的方式。

In the second part of the lecture, Principal Christopher Moses shared some useful tips and strategies for English learning. Students should create their own English bubble. For example, set the default language of phones and laptops into English, use English searching engine like Bing International, take advantage of the rich English learning resources online, watch English videos without subtitle, define words with English, name your environment and so on. Language is cumulative: it is harder and frustrating at the beginning, but it will be easier and more useful as the accumulation builds up. The immersion in an English Environment is the most effective way to learn English.

之后Christopher Moses校长给大家上了一节英语课,让大家体验了地道的美国高中英语课堂。英语学习也可以很有趣!Steven老师也解答了家长和同学在英语学习方面的困惑。我们还整理了非常好的英语学习资源分享给报名参加的大小朋友们。

Then, one group had a wonderful American English class with Principal Christopher Moses to learn that English learning can be fun. The other group had furthur discussion about specific English learning problems with Mr. Steven Bonta. We also shared some wonderful online English learning resources with the audience.
