上海宏润博源学校美国文学课上的同学最近在阅读美国革命时期鼓动殖民者支持独立的演讲，宣传册等文本。

Students in American Literature, as part of their recent unit on the Revolutionary era, studied speeches, pamphlets and other texts that were written to sway colonists toward independence.

同学们重点学习了说服性演讲的修辞手法，从排比到夸张到比喻再到反问，同学们解析了如何使用文字说服人们采取行动。

In particular, students learned about a number of rhetorical techniques used to make persuasive arguments. From parallelism to hyperbole, from figurative language to rhetorical questions, they explored how words can compel people to action.

为了更好地理解这些修辞手法，同学们需要每人写一篇有说服力的演讲稿，并且在班级里演说。这也要求同学们尝试新的写作风格:使用短且干脆的句子以及主动动词;使用排比;演讲的时候也要注意重音以及音量起伏的应用。

In order to better understand this style of writing, students were asked to craft—and perform—their own speeches. This required them to shift their usual style of composition: to utilize short, crisp sentences, with active verbs; to deploy repetitive language; and to make sure they could pronounce and enunciate their words with varied emphasis and volume.

演讲的时候，同学们只允许使用简单的笔记。老师会根据同学们是否清晰地表达了观点，是否能很好地吸引观众来评估同学们的演讲。整体而言，同学们表现都很出色!

Indeed, they were only allowed to use sparse notes, and were evaluated based on how well their spoken language reflected their ideas, and their ability to engage the audience. On the whole, the class did excellently!

同学们的演讲题目各不相同，但是都非常吸引人，比如有同学的论点是技术会增强创新，而另一个同学的论点是各种电子屏幕让我们分心，消耗了我们的注意力，我们应当多些面对面的沟通;有同学说服大家市政相关部门应出台更多规定，消除地铁上的不文明行为;有同学认为子女应该更好地承担起照顾老人的义务，而不是将他们送到敬老院等养老机构;中国应当采取积极行动避免肥胖症的蔓延。

The range of topics chosen by students was also compelling. One student argued that technology enabled greater creativity, while another countered that we’re all too distracted by screens and should focus more on face-to-face communication. We were also persuaded that more regulations are needed to avoid poor behavior on subways; that family’s ought to care for elderly relatives at home, rather than sending them to care facilities; and that China should take active steps to avoid an obesity epidemic.
