"The mule is not a living organism." Hearing the teacher said so, everyone was astonished. Then it suddenly occurred to us what we have learned recently in class----In order to be eligible for the title of an organism, a living thing should not only be able to move around, breathe and grow by itself, but it should also be able to excrete and reproduce etc., which are included in the fundamental skills of a living organism. However, the mule is the very being that can not breed on its own, so it can not be counted as a living organism.

From the lowest to the highest level, organisms are divided into five major kingdoms: prokaryotes, protists, fungi, plants, and animals. Furthermore,in each of the 5 big kingdoms, there are seven different categories. This may sound complicated, but after learning Karl Linnaeus' binominal nomenclature, we can clearly understand the precisest classification of each creature. In this week's class, having had a good command of what we’ve learned, each fellow student completed a presentation entitled “we should use names such as kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species so as to accurately describe a creature.”
We have learned and benefited a lot from the different descriptions of creatures given by more than a dozen of our fellow students.
Nick Lu volunteered to be the first to give his presentation. He introduced to us a creature named “leopard cat”. Not only did he provide us with its general information and its classifications, but he also described the characteristics of each of its species in detail. By listening to his presentation, we acquired a deeper understanding of the "Leopard Cat", and learned more about the seven categories as well.
Andy Xu introduced to us the lion, which is also an animal belonging to the feline family, but he focused on different aspects. He soundly proved that the lion is a real creature instead of an object on the ground of the several characteristics that an living organism should possess. Besides, he made the pictures in his PPT eye-catching, enabling us to easily get his points.
The next few students shared with us much new knowledge about many animals, ranging from ones as small as frogs to ones as large as whales, with no category left untouched. Some students made their presentations based on their exquisitely-made PPT, others kept talking about the animals they had chosen while writing something on the white board.
Our learning of the ABCs in biology was concluded, and the students really enjoyed sharing what they learned about the definition and classification of organisms. What’s more, they practised their speaking skills. Above all, through repeated practices, we will feel stronger affection for life and for this curriculum; by constantly sharing what we have learned, we will feel more confident in making presentations.
